On our first wedding anniversary, my husband canceled dinner because of what he called an “emergency meeting.”
I was disappointed, of course, but I tried to be understanding. Work emergencies happen. Plans change. Marriage, I had already learned, sometimes means accepting that life does not always respect the calendar.
So I went home alone, changed out of the dress I had carefully chosen for our anniversary dinner, and told myself we would celebrate another night.
Then the doorbell rang.
A delivery driver stood there holding a beautiful cake box.
For
a second, my disappointment disappeared.
I smiled.
